Greatest Goals Ever Scored by Defenders

On our Twitter site (@DefDiscussions) we posed the question, What was the greatest goal ever scored by a defender? Defenders in the last few years have really stepped up and scored some big goals in huge games. Brazilian, Juliano Belletti scored the winner in the 2005/06 Champions League final for Barcelona to beat Thierry Henry's Arsenal. In the same year, Fabio Grosso not only scored the winner in the Semi Final but slotted the winning penalty in the 2006 World Cup. Although the three goals were fantastic, it was the importance of the goal that made them great. We wanted great strikes and twitter nation has responded by putting forward their favourites . We at Defensive Discussions went through all the candidates and came up with our five greatest goals scored by a defender. Unfortunately, we could not find any video footage of the Sean 'That's the ticket" Lawlor goal against Mansfield Town F.C or worthy Gary Neville strikes. So here they are in reverse order:

5. Philippe Albert Chip - This sublime chip was the fifth goal in a 5-0 crushing of the eventual champions Manchester United. The Belgium defender capped off a great team performance with this moment of magic and being a defender too, fantastic!

4. Roberto Carlos "The Impossible Goal"- People might not agree with this choice because they question if Roberto Carlos actually meant to shoot. In the end I didn't care because it is a great strike, with the goalie being beaten by the devastating amount swerve put on the ball by the Brazilian left back.

3. "Top Bin"- The decision to leave either Maicon's winning volley or Erik Edman's strike at Anfield out of the top 5 was too big for one man. Instead I decided to put both in at number 3. Enjoy!

2. The Greatest Team Goal in World Cup History- Carlos Alberto finished off one of the best team moves you will ever wish to see. Great team move and a defender finishing it off is the reason why this falls at number two. The music is great too!

1. The Strike That Defies Belief- 80% of the tweets we received mentioned this particular goal and I have to agree with the masses. Brazil were playing France and Roberto Carlos steps up to hit a delicious free kick past Fabien Barthez. So please sit back and enjoy this famous moment in our sport, especially the slow motion replay!
